Shirley Cheeney

1936 - 2015

 

 

Shirley Irene Francis Cheeney, 78 year old long time Ten Sleep resident, died on March 7, 2015 at the Worland Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center. 

Shirley was born March 16, 1936 to Ivor E. Francis and Hannah C. Larkins Francis on a farm near St. Edward, Nebraska.  She was schooled the first eight years in a one room country school.  She attended high school at St. Edward, Nebraska and graduated in 1953.  After high school she attended Aircraft Control Tower Operator School in Omaha.   

 

Her next step was to move to Worland where she lived with her aunt Eileen Travers and worked for the Northern Wyoming Daily News.  Later, she and Shirley Cheeney Lapp lived together and thru her roommate she met the man she married, Shirley’s brother Derald Cheeney.  They were married April 20, 1957 in Lincoln, Nebraska.  

 

Derald was discharged from the US Air Force in March of 1958 and they moved to Ten Sleep, where they raised four children.  Shirley loved living on their farm.   She was a very skilled seamstress and liked building things with wood.  She always had a big garden and did lots of canning.  She enjoyed working out in her yard and had many flowers.  She struggled with some health issues but they did not stop her from helping with lambing sheep and everything connected to ranch life.  

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers.  

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Derald; children, Janet (Ted) Collen, Clayton (Nan) Cheeney of Ten Sleep and Carmen (Ron) Collen, Clinton (Jodi) Cheeney of Buffalo, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, her sisters, Marilyn (Jerry) Nissen, Beverly Minturn and Blanche Hastings from Genoa Nebraska and three sister-in-laws in Nebraska.

 

Funeral services will be held 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at the Ten Sleep United Methodist Church with Pastor Steve Brown officiating, Burial will follow at the Ten Sleep Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be 6:00 to 7:00 pm Tuesday evening at Bryant Funeral Home.
