John [Jack] S Hawks was born in Iowa in 1868.  He was in Red Lodge, Carbon, MT in 1900 and about that time he married Adie M Putton.  They were living in Nye, Stillwater, MT and owned their own property in 1910 (U.S. census) and all four of their children were born there between 1903-1909: John W, George, Zula [Zella] and Thelma.  By 1920 census reports, Adie had passed away and Jack Hawks was a widower and had his mother-in-law Mary Putton living with them.  In the mid-twenties, the Hawks family moved to Ten Sleep, Washakie, WY.  Jack ran a poolroom/bar combination for several years and then bought the Ten Sleep Bar where he and his daughter Thelma worked.  A Mrs. Hawks lived down the same street and took care of Jack’s orphaned daughter as his son John W passed away in 1931 in Ten Sleep.  Jack passed away in 1959.

Memories:  The Hawks family made a living in a way (at that time) that was somewhat looked askance at (poolrooms and bars), but as far as I know they walked a careful line and were respectable citizens in the town’s view.  Fb
