     POWELL --- Funeral services for Powell resident Edward Eugene Smith, 69, will be Wednesday, June 13 at 10 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church at Carey and Avenue H in Powell with Rev. Roger Smith officiating.

     Burial will be at the Ten Sleep Cemetery on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

     Ed died Friday, June 8, 2001 at the Powell Hospital.

     He was born Oct. 15, 1931 at Ten Sleep, the son of Joe Edward and Millicent Lura (Young) Smith.  He was raised on a ranch near Ten Sleep and attended schools in Ten Sleep.

     Following high school graduation, he attended the University of Wyoming in Laramie where he graduated from the college of education in 1952.

     He married  Peggy O'Neal Burch at Abilene, Texas on Aug. 19, 1961.  The couple had lived in Lovell and Powell since retiring. 

     He spent the next 28 years teaching elementary and high school  classes in Wyoming, Montana and other western states.  He earned a masters degree and worked as a school psychologist for several years in Montana and Wyoming.

     After his retirement, Ed worked as an independent insurance broker, specializing in senior citizens' needs.

     Following his retirement, he spent his time doing things he loved, including reading, working with computers, and working in his garden where he liked to raise raspberries.

     Ed was instrumental in founding several local organizations.  He helped to found Friend of the Park County Fair and re-energized the floundering farmer's markets in Powell.

     He also founded the Christin Lamb Foundation after the death of his granddaughter Christin in 1998.  He had served as the Executive Director and President of the foundation, spending most of his time working for the foundation.

     He was preceded in death by his parents and his granddaughters Cynthia Halstead and Christin Lamb.

     He is survived by his wife Peggy of Powell; son Rod (Aimee) Smith of Cheyenne; daughters JoEllen Halstead of Powell and Laura (Eric) Lampman of Laramie, sister Millicent (Charles) Conley of Benton, Ky.; and grandchildren James, Elizabeth and Sarah Halstead of Milford, N.H.; Jessica Lamb and Kyric Lampman of Laramie, Wyo.; and Colby and Drew Smith of Cheyenne, Wyo.

     Memorials may be made to the Christin Lamb Foundation in care of the First National Bank in Powell.

     The casket will be open at the church in Powell from 9 a.m. until service time on Wednesday.
