Phyllis J. Strong

TEN SLEEP – Longtime Worland resident Phyllis J. Strong, 86, passed away at Washakie Medical Center in Worland on Oct. 31, 2011.

She was born on Nov. 29, 1924 in Casper, the daughter of William H. and Florence Jane (Moses) Prevo. She lived at Casper until moving to a farm east of Manderson when she was seven years old. Phyllis was raised and schooled at Manderson where she graduated from Manderson High School.

Following high school, she moved to Denver, Colo. to work. While living in Denver, she met Charles N. “Chic” Hillhouse, Sr. and the couple married in Denver in 1946.

Following his discharge from the Army Air Corps, they moved to North Carolina for a short time. In 1948, the family moved to Worland where he was a mechanic. They later divorced.

Phyllis raised their three sons in Worland.

She worked for many years as the office manager for the Worland Board of Public Utilities and did the bookkeeping for Ricker Pharmacy for many years as a second job.

She loved music and dancing, something she was able to enjoy while Chic played in local bands. She also was an avid reader.

She married John R. Strong in Worland in 1974. The couple retired in 1987 and moved to Hyattville. They enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. They later divorced.

Phyllis was a life member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. She held most local positions in both organizations and had also served at the district level.

She was preceded in death by her sons, C. Randy Hillhouse and C.N. “Rube” Hillhouse, Jr.; her parents; her brother, Randall Prevo; and her grandson, Matt Harper.

Phyllis is survived by her son, Richard “Rick” (Connie) Hillhouse of Worland; her grandsons, Scott Hillhouse of Cottonwood, Ariz., Rich Hillhouse of Pine Bluffs, Richard Hillhouse and Jay Hillhouse both of Casper, Jimmy Hillhouse of Anchorage, Alaska and Abe Harper of Hobbs, N.M.; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The casket will be open at Veile Mortuary on Wednesday, Nov. 2 from 6-7 p.m.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 11 a.m. at the Ten Sleep Cemetery with Rev. Steve Couch officiating. Family and friends are invited to a reception at the American Legion Hall in Worland following the graveside service.
