Dan Van Wert was born in East Lyon Illinois on June 19, 1876 and lived in the Big Horn Basin for 44years and was well known in the area.He married Henrietta (Etta) in 1898 in Nebraska and in 1899 they were joined with a daughter Julia.He is listed as a carpenter in the 1900 census, Boone, Boone County, Nebraska. The family were living in Basin, Big Horn Co, in the 1910 census records; by 1920 they were residents of Worland, WY.†† Between 1930 and until he retired he and Etta owned and operated Vanís Lodge in the Ten Sleep Canyon.He was considered an authority on outdoor and wildlife and had an unusual hobby of making articles out of knotty pine.He passed away on 21 October 1950 survived by his wife, his daughter Julia and three sisters.

He could be seen around the town of Ten Sleep with his knotty pine cane! Fb
