Sarah Jennings Woods

1880 – 1903

Terril Mills Notes

Sarah is one of the hard to find persons in the Ten Sleep Cemetery. No obituary could be located.  The headstone in Ten Sleep shows that her maiden name is Jennings and that she had siblings who cared for her and supplied a headstone for her.  A marriage reference was found on Family Search in Sheridan County in 3 December 1903 for Sarah A Jennings and Neri D. Wood.  A reference in the newspaper project confirms the marriage but shows the date to be 13 December 1903. She would have been either 16 or 18 at the time depending on the two different birth dates of either 1878 in the 1880 Federal census or 1880 shown on her headstone in Ten Sleep.

 Sheridan Post no. 33 December 20, 1894, page 5

Married, Dec. 13, 1894, by Rev. E. D. Bostwick, at the home of the bride's parents near Banner, Mr. Neri Wood and Miss Sarah Jennings.

Further newspaper research shows her parent to most likely be Cal Jennings in the Banner area and that Neri and his brother lived in the Banner area and also had a ranch in the Nowood area for a while, but bounced back and forth between Nowood, Basin and Sheridan.

Further searching shows that Sarah was the daughter of Calvin Jones Jennings who was born in 1847 in Lexington, Missouri and is buried in Sheridan. Her mother is Margaret S Jennings born in Kentucky in 1848 and also buried in Sheridan.  The headstone of Calvin Jennings show that they traveled by covered wagon from Texas to Wyoming in 1884. The 1880 census shows that Sarah was born in 1878 in Texas instead of 1880 as the headstone shows.  What is interesting is that there is a marker for Sarah J Wood also in Sheridan.  No death or birth dates are displayed. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Jennings&GSiman=1&GScnty=3135&GRid=31622188&

Margaret Susan Grundy and Calvin Jones Jennings had the following children:

i. Mary J. Jennings, daughter of Calvin Jones Jennings and Margaret Susan Grundy

was born on 02 Jun 1871 in Gainesville, Cooke, Texas. She died on 11 Nov 1915 in

Washakie Co., Wyoming. She married John Fletcher Buckmaster, son of Joshua R.

Buckmaster and Delilah Jane Pierson in 1885 in Johnson County, Wyoming. He

Natrona, Wyoming.

Notes for Mary J. Jennings:

MARY J BUCKMASTER1871-1915 Researched & compiled by Faye Bell

(SLC) 2014

Mary Jane Jennings Buckmaster was born in Texas about 1869. Her parents

are unknown (too many Mary Jennings) but she was born into the illustrious old

family of New England Jennings. On December 24, 1885 she married John

Fletcher Buckmaster in Buffalo, Wyoming. The family had originally lived on the

current Carter holdings, but in 1892 they moved from Ten Sleep to Otter Creek.

The 1910 U.S. census reveals they were living on Spring Creek, Big Horn County,

Wyoming. The following children are listed: Fred, Edith, Lennie, William, Claire

(Topsy) and Mike. She passed away 10 June 1915 at her home on Spring Creek

where the couple lived. She was preceded in death by her daughter Edith who died

in 1909 at the age of 19 years.

Memories: The Buckmasters are a very colorful family It was her husband that

rode for the sheriff at the Spring Creek Raid. It was her son Mike that was well

known as a bronc rider in Wyoming rodeos. I only knew Mike and Topsy and

Mikes family: Ione, Billy and Shirley Buckmaster - never a dull moment there. FB

Notes for John Fletcher Buckmaster:

John Fletcher Buckmaster

Johnnie Buckmaster was born August 12, 1860 in Elkhart, Indiana to a Quaker

minister Joshua and Delilah Jane. When Johnnie was a youngster the family

moved to Kansas and took up a homestead there in a Quaker settlement. The

Buckmasters were raising "standard bred horses" in Kansas. During their stay in

Kansas, both Buckmaster parents passed away. As Johnnie was the eldest child,

He went to work for horse trader to assist with family support. Later he got a job on

the railroad and went to Texas to become a cowboy. In 1880 he went to Buffalo,

the railroad and went to Texas to become a cowboy. In 1880 he went to Buffalo,

Wyoming, as a cowboy at $25 to $30/month. Because of the poor wages paid,

Johnnie went into business as a freighter with 8 oxen and a wagon hauling from

Rock Springs to Cheyenne to Buffalo and to Fort Fetterman. Sometimes he

freighted logs from the mountains for early cabins. Between this time and 1889, he

married Mary Jennings and their first son Fred Buckmaster was born. In 1889 he

and Bill Garrison moved to Ten Sleep. Garriaon homesteaded the old Frison place

(now Ten Sleep Cattle Company) and raised steers. Buckmaster surrendered his

rights to the homestead on the Ten Sleep creek to Lew McCreery and purchased

the Otter Creek Ranch that Pat Beckley lives on in 1985. After the Spring Creek

Raid, John Buckmaster bought Joe Emge's ranch and lived there until 1915. The

children of John Fletcher Buckmaster were: Fred, Linnie, Bill, Edith, Claire and

Mike.

1. ii. Sarah A. Jennings, daughter of Calvin Jones Jennings and Margaret Susan Grundy

was born in May 1879 in Texas. She died in Mar 1903 in Worland, Washakie,

Wyoming. She married Neri D. Wood, son of Wood in 1894 in Sheridan, Sheridan,

Wyoming. He was born in Jun 1863 in Missouri. He died after 1940 in ? Sheridan,

Sheridan, Wyoming.

Neri D. Wood Husband of Sarah J Wood

Among the invading footsteps of advancing civilization which broke into the primeval solitude and wild luxuriance of  Northern Wyoming were those of Neri D. Wood, one of the well-established and enterprising stockgrowers of the Tensleep region of Bighorn county, whose contributions to the development of the region have been substantial and considerable, and who has, while helping materially in the progress of his county, found a welcome guerdon for his labors in the accumulation of a satisfactory competence for himself.  Mr. Wood was born in June 1862, in the state of Missouri, where his parents, Levi  and Margaret (Estes) Wood, were successfully engaged in farming.  When he was years old the family removed to Wyoming, locating about fifty miles  north of Cheyenne on Horse Creek.  There they carried on a flourishing stock business, and in its service the son Neri rode the range.  He  continued this until 1885 when they all removed to Johnson county, and there he followed the same occupation for five years longer.  In 1890 he engaged in the stock business on his own account near Sheridan, remaining there until 1898.  He then came to the Bighorn basin and, securing an eligible  location on No Wood River, pushed with vigor on a large scale the cattle business which he had been conducting in a smaller way at his former place.  He has 1,120 acres of well-selected land, with a desirable diversity of altitude to furnish the necessary ranges for his stock and on this tract which if one of the choice ones of this river bottom, he has a herd of 900 excellent cattle and a nice band of well-bred horses and also carries on extensive farming operations, which are among the most advance and successful in this portion of the county.  Mr. Wood may almost be said to have been born to the cattle business, for he began operations in it with his youth and has followed it in its various developments and phases in different places continuously since then.  His experience in it has been long and fruitful, and he has applied it in the management of his own estate with great success and discrimination.  There is no part of the industry whit which he is not familiar from actual experience, there is no emergency connected with it to which he has not proven equal when confronted by it and the evidences of these conditions are everywhere present around him.  He was married at Sheridan, Wyo., to Miss Sarah Jennings, a native of Texas, but an early resident of Wyoming.
