     TEN SLEEP --- Mary Edith Thaxton, 96, of Ten Sleep, died Sunday, Nov. 20, in the Wyoming  Retirement Center in Basin.
     She was born Feb. 13, 1898, in Norborne, Mo., a daughter of John F. and Emma (Burns) Shriver.  She moved with her family to Buffalo when she was six years old.  Her mother operated the Hazelton Hotel in the mountains for several years, and they moved into the Big Horn Basin in 1911.
     On Nov. 15, 1915, she married Ben Halmer.  He died in 1920.
     On June 2, 1922, she married Lige Thaxton in Worland. He died in 1968.
     She was an active outdoorswoman and worked with her husband in the fields. She also was an excellent horsewoman.
     She moved into Ten Sleep in 1939 after ranching on the Lower Nowood for several years.
     Mrs. Thaxton was a member of the Ten Sleep Methodist Church, where she was active in the church and the Ladies Aid Society.  She also was an American War Mother and a member of the VFW Auxiliary.  She enjoyed working in her garden.
     Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Davis of Ten Sleep; nine grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one son, two daughters, three brothers, one sister, one granddaughter and one great-grandson.
     The service is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. today in the Ten Sleep United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tyler Curtis officiating.  The casket will be open at the church from 1 p.m. to service time.  Burial will be in Ten Sleep Cemetery.
     Veile Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
     Memorials may be made to the Ten Sleep Methodist Church or the Ten Sleep Senior Citizens Center.
